Drawing of Rattlesnake Master

Well hey there, partner! The name’s Rattlesnake Master. I’m a plant that’s been hangin’ around the Southern plains for a long time, and let me tell you, I’m one tough customer with a whole lotta uses!

I’m tops in the traditional medicine practices of several Native Nations. The Cherokee folks used me to relieve issues with breathing and coughing. They cut and boil my roots to help prevent whooping cough. They also used me as a remedy for toothaches, where they’d hold water steeped with my stems in their mouth for some relief.

Now, don’t get too close if you’re not careful. My leaves can get a bit prickly. I reckon that’s how I got my name. But here’s the thing: I’m not called Rattlesnake Master for no reason. I remember when people used me to treat rattlesnake bites, or at least ease the pain from ’em. They’d crush up my roots and apply ‘em to the wound, hoping I’d take the sting outta the bite.

But, don’t let my tough exterior fool ya! I’ve got a soft side when it comes to healing. The Mvskoke (Creek) people found me mighty helpful for pesky nerve pain. They’d steep my roots in cold water to ease their woes. Like your Pal Big Cedar, I’ve been known to help with rheumatism too, bringing relief to sore joints. But it doesn’t stop there! I’ve been used to purify the blood, help with digestion, and support the kidneys. Some folks even called me a bit of a panacea, meaning I got it covered, no matter what ailed ya.

I’ve also got a calming side to me. I can help folks feel more peaceful and tranquil, perfect for those who needed to unwind after a long day. The Meskwaki people found me useful as an antidote for poisons and to treat bladder troubles. Whether it was for pain, poison, or a whole host of other ailments, I’ve been a trusted plant to have around.

Besides that, I’ve got some practical uses too. I’ve been used in making brooms and brushes. My long, stiff leaves make a real fine bristle for sweepin’ the floors and keepin’ the dust down. I’ve been around a lot of folks who had to make do with what they could find, and let me tell you, I’ve been a handy friend to have around when you’re in need of something hardy.

So whether you’re looking for a bit of medicine, a handy broom, or just need a plant that knows how to survive in the tough Southern heat, I’m your pal. Don’t let my prickly exterior fool ya. There’s a whole lot more to me than meets the eye. Just remember, if you see me out in the wild, give me a nod and know that ol’ Rattlesnake Master has been around a long time, doin’ good work for folks like you.
